Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka, Yao Wen, expressed China’s support for Bangladesh in opposing external interference to maintain domestic stability and achieve development. He made this statement on September 25, 2023, during a reception hosted by the Chinese embassy to celebrate China’s 74th anniversary.

“China supports Bangladesh in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and in opposing external interference so that the country can maintain domestic unity and stability and achieve development and revitalization,” he said.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Foreign Affairs Faruk Khan were among the dignitaries present.

The Chinese assurance came after the US State Department announced visa measures on September 22, 2023. These measures targeted individuals who were seen as undermining the democratic election process in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Yao Wen emphasized the commitment of Bangladesh and China to deepen strategic cooperation and enhance their bilateral relations. He highlighted Bangladesh’s adherence to the one-China principle. Yao Wen elucidated China’s role in promoting regional peace and stability. He also noted Bangladesh’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the growth of BRI cooperation in the Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh was the first South Asian country to join the BRI in 2016.

The ambassador called for increased cooperation in infrastructure development, information technology, new energy, agriculture, and other fields, aiming to complement each other’s economic strengths. He expressed optimism about realizing the Chinese Dream of the Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation and Bangladesh’s Vision 2041 through joint efforts.

Ambassador Yao Wen highlighted the decade-long amicable neighborhood relations between China and Bangladesh and their collaborative efforts in addressing common challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the surge of dengue fever. He stressed the importance of mutual respect and understanding in sustaining common interests at regional and international levels.

The reception featured various cultural performances, including acrobatics, Chinese calligraphy, and Sichuan opera. An exhibition showcased achievements in Belt and Road cooperation between China and Bangladesh. Cultural booths highlighted themes such as “A Bite of Sichuan,” “Colorful Yunnan,” “Ink Wash,” and “Read China.”

Earlier this year, on June 14, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that China stands ready “to work together with Bangladesh and other countries to oppose all forms of hegemonism and power politics … and build a community with a shared future.” The announcement followed the US visa policy declaration on May 24, 2023, aimed at “supporting democratic elections in Bangladesh.”
